P35 garbage can solution

Hello again everyone from Canada's frozen north.  I've been working on a little P35 project over the past few months and I wanted to post a few pics.  I'm sure others have thought of this small upgrade to the Princess 35, but some new members may be able to benefit.

This all started when we bought the boat about 3 seasons ago.  We couldn't find any convenient location to place a galley trash can..... there was no space under the sink and no extra cabinet space that we could give up for a container.  The best we could do was to use a small (very small) container and move it around in the galley. One night while on board my eight year old son, who I swear is going to be an engineer, suggested that we use the space under the stairs for trash cans.  What a brilliant idea!  This starts the project and here are the near-final results.

I built the new stairs to be a stand-alone unit... That way I didn't need to permanently attach them to the bulkhead and we can slide the entire unit, trash bins and all, out as needed.  I will still have to attached it to the bulkhead and will likely use some sort of magnetic closure to keep it secure.  We recently changed the flooring in the galley from carpet to laminate and I wanted to change the stairs to laminate as well.  This could have created a problem differentiating the stairs from the flooring so I added a cherry boarder to each tred.

The only real challenge I had was trying to find trash containers that would fit into the space.  I eventually ended up buying the closest sized plastic container that I could find and gently heating it in the oven to make it maliable.  Once warm enough, I was able to carefully reshape/resize the bins to fit the space available.  Of course the smaller one had to be cut down.

I took the unit out to the boat yesterday and, despite the below zero temps, I was able to do a test fit and snap a few pics (attached).  Turned out pretty good I think.  If anyone is interested in taking a project like this on, let me know.  I can post more details and photos.

Cheers!

A smart solution to a familiar challenge.

I opted for making a similar solution to that on the P430, where the trash can is integrated in the galley workbench.

My project was fueled by me purchasing a new cooker that turned out to be 7cm wider than the old one, resulting in a total re-build of the galley area. (Yes, the thought of returning the cooker and sourcing a narrower one DID briefly cross my mind)

I have also increased the size of the over-bench cabinet, made a new shelf above the refrigerator, a cup-holder rack on top of the upper most shelf and put in some LED lightstrips to improve the worklight in the galley area

We are quite pleased with the end result, and I think I will adapt your idea to make a container for empty bottles and cans.

Kdran - I saw your post earlier and wondered if that opening to the left of the sink was a top-entry garbage can.  Nice work!  Rebuilding the kitchen with new solid-surface counters, new induction cooktop and sink is next years project. I think we'll remove the oven and replace it with a convection microwave (never use oven).I'm a little worried about matching wood grain when I undertake the larger kitchen project.  Did you have issues matching things up and what approach did you use?

Yes, I did have some challenges matching up the wood grain and color.

As I was running out of patience by the time I, rather reluctantly, started the galley project, I took the simple approach by re-using as much as possible of the old galley fronts.

The main challenge I faced was that the teak veneer I was able to find on short notice had a much grayer patina to it than that originally used by Princess. I ideally should have made new doors and drawer fronts, but to save time as the summer holiday was rapidly approaching I opted to sand down and re-use the original parts. You can tell from the bottom picture I posted that there is some difference in color, but it does not bother us much.

That said, the state of the woodwork in my boat was horrendous, so any work done to it was a major improvement over the original state.

Judging from the pictures you posted, the woodwork in your vessel seems to be in very good condition so I guess it would be worthwhile for you to do a more thorough wood-sourcing job than I did.

If I can gather the will and strength I might try staining the galley fronts to make the differences in color less apparent. If I opt to do so, I will do it as part of the next big project which is to convert the dinette area into a 3-bed cabin. Not quite sure of when I will do it though, as I have some mechanical engine issues that need to be prioritized. (New sterndrives + in the worst case a major overhaul of the port engine due to fluctuating oil pressure. Crossing fingers that it is only a faulty oil-pressure sensor)

Thanks for the response.

Yes, the woodwork on my 35 is in pretty good shape.... a testiment to the previous owner.  The trim I have been using is actually 1/4 cut American cherry. Once it ages a little, it comes very close to the teak used by Princess (on my boat anyway).

If I undertake the kitchen rebuild, I may just take a deep breath and replace all the fronts at the same time... It's really the only way to ensure everything matches up. Unless I come up with another solution, this is probably the route I'll take.

I too have some mechanical issues that I'm dealing with .... In my case it's a transmission rebuild.... Hopefully these mechanical items don't preclude us from continuing the interior work!!

Cheers,
