Overwinytering at Tromsø

Hello. I plan to stay in Tromsø during the winter of 2018/2019, with my aluminium 44 ft Koopmans sailing ship. I live permanently on this boat. It has an insulated hull and top, but it is not optimised for artic circumstances. For instance, windows are a single layer of hardened glass or polycarbonate. The metal window frames form a cold bridge, which is liable to condensation or frosting from inside.

I plan to add a boatcover, supported by the boom, which will act as an 'umbrella' above the deck, to reduce heat radiation. When the temperatures are such that collected snow will be permanent, I will take the boatcover away, so the deck can be covered with an insulating snow cover.

My question: When I visited Oslo in winter, I saw that some boats in harbour had a kind of 'blankets', apparantly for insulation purposes. Are these standard products which I might find around Tromsø?

Tromsø is the largest town in the area so you can pretty much get what you want there, and if you don't get it it's easily shipped there. I don't know what type of blankets you are referring to, but Tromsø can get windy. Not crazy windy, but much more than Oslo. And getting help in Tromsø should be easy. Several people on this forum lives in or just outside Tromsø and I'm pretty sure some of them could help out if you need it.

Don't put your trust in snow as insulation, it blows away and melts pretty fast. I live outside of Tromsø, a few hours with car, and I've had about two weeks of snow on the boat this season. Though we are far north, we're also lucky having the gulf stream, and we just had two days with temperatures around +5C.

When do you come north? What is your route? And most important, why?

Most people goes the other way, south. Nice to hear from someone coming this way.

Yeah we are serveral users from Tromsø in here, so feel free to ask more questions. Not many live on their boats in Tromsø, very few ports have facilities that support this. For those that do live in their sailboats I've not seen use of insulating mats. Dehumidifers and both electric and petrol warmers are in wide use. Tromsø is a very snowy place, so you'll get plenty of snow insulation most of the winter season, and free exercise when removing snow from the hull. As has been pointed out you should however be able to aquire all kinds of stuff here, including insulation if you want.
