Boat Guy: You should check out the soon-to-be-released product from NoLand Engineering. The MD33 is an elegant solution for older engines needing NMEA2000. The basic principle is to sample the analog gauge readings, as well as pulse rates for tachometers and fuel flow meters, then convert those readings into NMEA2000.

JackRabbit: This product is shown on the Noland website as a pre-announcement of an upcoming release. I spoke to Noland yesterday and learned that their goal is to release the product before the end of the first quarter.

The device has interfaces for one or two engines and connects to the analog signal wires on the back of the existing analog gauges (or anywhere else in the harness where they might be accessible). The raw input, in the form of DC voltages, goes through a USB port to a PC, where it is processed and displayed onscreen by the Noland software included with the interface. As each make of engine may have different scale factors for different sensors, the user has to set up the scale factor through the software (e.g. a scale factor is needed between the voltage on the engine temperature sensor input and a temperature reading, to know how to convert the voltage for display). Eventually, as experience is gained with different engines and gauges, configuration files can be provided for standard setups.

NMEA 2000 messages are created within the PC software and then sent back down to the interface unit for transmission over an NMEA2K network. This means that the PC has to be on, and running the Noland software, for there to be any engine data on the network. Ideally, at a later stage, Noland would set it up so that the PC could download the scale factors to the interface once configuration was complete. Then the unit could work without the need for a PC connection other than at initial setup and it seems to me that this would make the product a lot more attractive to those who don't have an onboard PC, or have a laptop onboard but don't use it while under way. But this needs more processing power in the interface than is available right now.

Expected list price for the unit will be "under $1000" says Noland.
