Yes, make a few stiches with a sewing needle and some nylon twine, then cover it with a little elastic tape to make sure it won't get stuck.

I've always just duct taped the old and new halyard together, end to end, when changing. Not too much tape, three rounds should do the trick. It's held up very well and the tape has actually been quite tough to get off. You're probably safer if you stitch the ends together, too, but it's not necessary IMHO.
