Introduction and a question!

Hi folkens.

My name is Mike. I am an Anglo/American, living here in Norway.

I am planning on buying a boat in the near future. I have my eye on one, but it is clear that the Volvo 2020 is on the way out.

It is leaking, overheating, etc. Most likely caused be severe corrosion due to the salt water.

So, my question to the group is, what would it cost to replace with something around 18hp?

Hi, and welcome to baatplassen.

With installation you are looking at 120k+ for a new engine.

 

Buying a reconditioned engine might shave off some expense, but it all depends on the amount of work that needs to be done in the engine bay to prepare it for a new engine.

Recently I sold a Comfort 32 with a MD 2020. The engine  was installed new in 2005, and it still both looked and perfermed like a new motor. 400 engine hours on it.

How old is your 2020? Maybe you can consider some repair - and have a working motor for many years to come - for a lot less than a replacement would set you back.

Volvo/Yanmar are definitely in the upper price range. You should check out Nanni, Beta, Sole, Iveco and several other alternatives that might shave off the price tag considerably. If you are looking for a 'turn key' installation I also suggest you indicate where in Norway you are located as a lot of the members here have knowledge on local marinas that can be recommended with rgds to price and quality.
