FM Motor C2, oil coming out of the snorkling valve

Hello my name is Thomas,

I'm from Stralsund, Germany and some weeks ago I bought a small, open, wooden boat in Kristiansand, Norway. The boat is equipped with an 1-cylinder-engine, made by FM Motor in Fredrikstad, Norway. Meanwhile we get the engine running, but unfortunately there is a lot of oil coming out of the snorkling valve. Maybe there is too much oil in the engine, maybe there is anything wrong with the snorkling valve. Another triggy point is the connection between the gear box and the propeller drive shaft, as well as the connection between the pitch lever and the tube around the shaft which differs the pitch of the propellerblades.

It would be nice if anyone has some helpful ideas to fix the problems. Maybe there are some pictures, photos, videos or drawings to see how it should work.

Thank you for assistance and many greetings from Stralsund
Thomas.

Hi, nd congratulations on a classic motor. I cannot comment on the oil problem, as I have no experience.

As for the shaft  - in Norwegian "aksling"- connecting motor and propeller, I was always taught that the inner shaft is for the pitch, and the outer is for the propellers. In other words both need to be connected to the motor. It looks to me as if you lack a House - in Norwegian "flens", which has the function of links the aksling to the motor. If you look at the end of the motor oil your picture above, you will notice that there is an circle around the hole for the aksling. This is where I would guess there should be holes for connecting the aksling to the motor. Is there holes in their ring for bolts holding this connection together? If there are no holes, my assumption of a lacking flens is probably wrong.

When oil is coming out of strange places (example not the oil pan gasket) you most often have a problem with pressure. This pressure can come from too much oil (as you said), a blocked “breathing hole”, or the one a bit worse: exhaust into the engine. On newer engines the “breathing hole” is almost always the EGR-valve.

Exhaust inside the engine can come from a number of things: blown head gasket, bad exhaust valves or bad piston ring/worn sylinders.

I would suggest a compression test
