I will not be the judge of that. My point is that an alternative to go a long period of gaining experience, finances and preraring your own boat, you can jump on one of many possibillities of crewing across with an experienced skipper on a well prepaired boat, with a much larger budget for fitting out than what you will be able to put together.
I crossed the atlantic (Carebean, St Thomas, Azores, Gib) as skipper when I was 25, scared at times, and very glad we were a full crew on a >60 feet boat. Paid job, not much, but no cost for me.
