Southern Norway - Serbia

I'm new to the forum. Maybe, I put this post in the wrong subforum place.
It was with great pleasure that I read most of the posts on your forum. Very impressive stories...

I'm Dusan from Serbia. Born in 1964. I sailing Serbia rivers in a small motorboat (handmade, length 6.4m, width 2.1m; draft 0.4 m, Honda 7.5 hp outboard). I've been sailing for 8 years, have no experience of sailing at sea. I dream of buying a motorboat and sailing with him from southern Norway  to Serbia. I caught my eye on the Saga 27 model (circa 1980. year) with about 50 hp. Or some in that class. As we know, there are excellent and affordable boats in this class in Norway.

1 Route

Please, in your opinion, could I safely travel by this boat (eg Saga 27) from 'Southern Norway to Germany'? And if this mission is realizable, which route is best for me? Over Germany canals then Holland canals I would descend through the canals of France then the Main river then the Danube to Serbia. Or is this my dream too bigger?

 

2. Boat 

My budget for boat: 6000-9000 eur. plus budget for sailing. I'm not just watching Saga 27. There's also Nimbus, Tresfjord, Marex, Sundvik.
Please feel free and you suggest a good boat for my route.

Correct forum!

 

Should not be any problems travelling the canals from Germany to the mediterranien sea.

I do not have any experience doing so, but I have read a book in Norwegian about it, and it must be a fantastic journey.

 

Regarding these boats, they are not new anymore, but Saga 27 is good quality, and popular.

Performing such a long journey, the engine is the most important thing to be aware of. 

I recommend that you gå for a fresh water cooled engine, and not buy a sea water cooled engine,

due to corrosion problematics are lower when fresh water cooled.

Many Saga 27 from the 80's have Yanmar 4JH engines, and they are great.

And the fuel consumption on these are low.

 

This is the place where norwegians advertise their boats.

Routing: From Norway go east of Denmark and take the Kiel canal. I know of one other who used a Saga 27 on the European rivers. Can't remember the exact route, but if my memory is correct, he has done the French canals to the Med, and also possibly Eastern Europe canals, all.the way to the Black Sea?

I believe 3,5 meter air draft is the absolute max limit for most of the French canals. Pilot books will give the details.

Saga is great, but don't expect it to be comfortable under heavy seas. All the boats you are mentioning are called "snekke" a common denominator against them, is that they roll a lot. It isnt dangerous, but you have to get used to it. The most seaworthy snekke is Viksund, with no doubt. The hull is even used in small fishing boats, fishing in lofoten wintertime, in very rough conditions. You can even get them with small sails, wich dampen the rolling. 

 

 

The boat over is a Viksund Columbi 27. They also have a bigger brother called "Goldfish". The most famous one "Magnus" has sailed the east coast of USA. It is currently for sale, but it is a lot over your budget, it has a relatively new engine so its probably worth the higher asking price.

They doesnt have the beautiful lines from the Saga but is much more seaworthy. If you sail via the Mediterranean i would definetly go for a Viksund.

The forum user @Lars H. has owned a Saga 27 for(40?) years. You could hear about his experiences.

My goal is Sabac, Serbia via route: German channels - Dutch channels - Belgian channels - French channels, then I return to Germany: the Maine River, the Danube River (Austria and Hungary), then my beautiful river Sava.

My goal is not now the Mediterranean now.(maybe another year: From Serbia over the Danube and the Black Sea)

Could you please, send me detail route with ports and anchorage (where you sleep) areas of your cruising the Norwegian southern coast and Sweden from Norway to Göteborg? Or any internet link to this route...

How many miles I can to sail average on a good day on this route?

Expect approximately 40- 50 nautical miles pr. day, or 10 hours boating. So depending on where you plan to start:

Tønsberg - Fjällbacka (SE)

Fjällbacka - Rörö

Rörö - Varberg

Varberg - Torekov

Torekov - Malmö

Malmö - Stavreby (Dk)

Stavreby - Gedser

Gedser - Marina Großenbrode (DE)

Marina Großenbrode - Lubeck

Good weather is a must on some of the passages.

If you find a boat you would like to see/buy, I think it is possible to ask here if someone could take a look at it and maybe do a testdrive for you.

I believe you will find honest people here, with a lot of experience who might can take a look if not too far away.

Then you would get an opinion from someone else if it is a good buy or not.

Not so good to buy a boat you have not seen, and travel all the way from Serbia to Norway, and it turns out to be a bad boat.

We have something called "hentetur" on the forum.

People buy a boat, then people tell all about the trip to their homeport including pictures during the trip.

Very popular. Longer is better.

 

I would say this has an opportunity to be one of the greatest "hentetur" ever.

I'm not familiar with the channels and rivers through Europe.

Is it possible to go on canals/rivers from Germany to Adriatic Sea?

Then i would recommend that you write which city in germany you want to go to, and where your want to go to from there.

 

For example Moss Norway to Travemünde Germany, and I believe you will get some suggestions.

I will adwise you to bye Maps and guides you need for the distance. Then start planning. Basicly you will go from some place in Norway, between Denmark and Sveden to Germany and in the canals. It will be the weather who decide you whitch route you have to go. Is it transitt or you want to Explore the places you will sail past. 
I dont know what knowledge you have for that kind of sailing. You have to know about the marking system at sea. And this have to been in place before you start planning. You need draft (map for sea) and you must know How to read them. When all this is in place, you will easily create your route yourself.
